A Message from Mr. Westphal Regarding the 2020 Marching Band Season
MVHS Marching Band and Colorguard Families:
I feel like these letters are far too frequent. Over the last few months, it seems like event after event has been cancelled, and life as we knew it continues to remain on hold. This morning, I received an email from the Western Band Association stating that the 2020 marching band season would be cancelled. This decision came after many meetings with the directors in the circuit, as well as a continual monitoring of the guidance by various health organizations.
The cancellation of the competitive season impacts our program considerably, and I am devastated for those of you who would have been marching your final season this year. I want to be clear that I do not have all of the answers yet. However, there are a few things that I do know, and I hope that this little bit of information will help you prepare for what lies ahead this year.
Based on conversations with the administration at the end of last school year, marching band and color guard will still be offered as classes this fall. You will get credit for the class, including PE credit.
We, as a staff, will continue to prepare for the next seasons, eagerly anticipating a return to normalcy in the program. We will plan for Winter Guard and Winter Drumline, and continue to develop a marching show for use in the 2021 season.
During the fall semester, we will do our best to offer meaningful activities for you. We will still be playing music, developing as musicians, and refining our craft.
Finally, we will do our best to offer you a meaningful experience. While we cannot replace the season, we want you to have the best experience possible and will do what we can to make that possible.
I do not have much other information. I do not know what school will look like in the fall, or what exactly the class will include. I would encourage everyone to please stay enrolled in the class. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to me. I may not have answers, but I would love to work through your questions with you. As always, when I have a better idea about the details and reality of what is happening, I will let you know.
